Assorted Reverse Types of Constantine
Adventvs - Gloria Exercitvs
I
collect bronze coins of Constantine as Augustus. For an introductory page
on coins of Constantine as Caesar or FIL AVG, take a look at this page.
These coins are all the denomination of follis (plural- folles). Sizes
vary greatly, though. These coins are quite large early on (around 26 mm)
and gradually shrink (16-17 mm) as inflation sets in. I have included some
weights, but weight will vary and it does not serve as a diagnostic tool
for these coins. My ultimate goal is to have an example of one of every
reverse type used by Constantine. This will keep me busy the rest of my
life!

The coin, however, does not illustrate any transition from the Providentiae coinage, where Constantine already earlier had been accorded the obv. legend with MAX AVG. As it is difficult to accept this coin of the Gloria 2-standard as depicting Constantine II as Augustus, it should be classified as an inexplicable irregularity." RIC VII pg 558 |
